Does the thought of an eco-friendly life make you wonder about the expenses that come with it? Worry not, here are some great ways to help the planet with the basics of Reduce, Reuse and Recycle while saving money as well.

Reduce What You Use

The best way to save money while also going green is to reduce what you use. Start small and easy. Reduce your usage of electricity and lower your bills at the same time. Cut down on using the car each time you head to the mall and walk or cycle instead, and save on fuel costs as well.

Go Green and Save Money by Reusing

Do you end up throwing away sheets of paper that have a blank side? What about all that wrapping paper from a child’s birthday party? You’d be surprised at how easy it is to save money and be eco-friendly if all you do is to reuse what you own. Some ideas:

  • Turn old t-shirts into kitchen dusters and car cleaning cloths.
  • Reuse paper that has a side blank and make scribble pads and drawing “books” for toddlers and preschoolers.
  • Save wrapping paper and other scrap paper to reuse for craft paper, fillers and even, to jazz up a plain notebook or binder.
  • Invest in reusable cloth napkins instead of use-and-throw paper ones.
  • Reuse water drained from an RO system to wash the driveway or water the plants.
  • Reuse empty glass jars to store spices, dry mixes and homemade jellies.

Recycle to Go Green while Saving Money Too

If you want to be eco-friendly and green, you can start by recycling cans, clothes and more to save money and the planet at the same time. Here are a few ways to get started:

  • Encourage kids to save money for special treats by recycling soda cans.
  • Bring out the creative streak in your little ones by recycling baby food jars, cans, cardboard boxes, clothes, CDs and more into craft projects. A few good books to help with some ideas are Recycled Crafts Box with Laura C. Martin and Green Crafts for Children by Emma Hardy.
  • If you’re good with the sewing machine, recycle your old clothes to make a new one for a child or turn a child’s torn or old clothes into cute outfits for dolls. Better still, donate old but in good condition clothes to a nearby charity.

Starting with the 3 R’s of Reduce, Reuse and Recycle is a simple but sure-fire way of going green while saving money too. Try it for a month, keep a tab on your bills and you’ll be sure to find that you’ve actually saved money rather than spend it.
